Beating Goliath in Devil May Cry 5

Goliath is a formidable early boss in DMC5, but with the right approach, you can defeat him. Here's a breakdown of his attacks and strategies to take him down:

Goliath's attacks

  • Fist Swings and Ground Pounds: Watch his arm movements closely. Jump or dodge to the side to avoid. The double ground pound can stun; create distance and jump.
  • Charging Attack: Roll out of the way as he gets close.
  • Fire Beam (Outside Phase): He'll try to suck you in. Sprint and dodge perpendicular to the beam.
  • Fireballs and Rocks: He consumes debris and launches fiery projectiles. Keep moving and dodge laterally or jump. As Nero, you can try to knock fireballs back with a sword swipe.
  • Stomach Vacuum (Inside Phase): If caught, as Nero, sacrifice your current Devil Breaker (press LB/LT) to break free with an explosion. Time it to hit him!

General strategies

  • Stay Mobile: Goliath's attacks have wide range. Constant movement, jumping, and dodging are crucial.
  • Attack from Sides/Behind: His front is usually guarded. Flanking him offers safer attack opportunities.
  • Utilize Wire Snatch (Nero): If you create distance, use Nero's Wire Snatch (RB/RT + B/Circle) to close in quickly.
  • Air Superiority (Nero): Nero excels in the air. Use jump cancels and air combos. Consider the "Air Hike" and "Enemy Step" abilities.
  • Charged Shots (Nero): Nero's Blue Rose charged shots deal significant damage. Use them during openings.
  • Devil Breakers (Nero):
    • Buster Arm: Use for powerful throws when Goliath is stunned.
    • Gerbera: Provides excellent air mobility for dodging and repositioning.
    • Overture: Its charged attack deals massive damage and can stun.
  • Devil Trigger: Use for a temporary power boost and health recovery when needed.
  • Parrying (Nero): With precise timing, Nero can parry some attacks, leaving Goliath vulnerable.
  • Be Patient: Goliath has high health. Focus on dodging and learning his patterns. Avoid being too aggressive.

What to try

Gerbera is your best friend in the air. Just spam it with the left stick (LS/L3) to pick your dodge direction and stay floaty (but watch your height).

To get in close and do some damage from above, lock on and flick the stick back or forward while hitting the sword button. That Roulette Spin combo (attack, attack, wait a sec, attack) is pretty sweet too. You can even jump off him to keep your air game going, just snatch him when he's not swinging.

Try for Max Acts every time, even a little Exceed helps. Aim for that head whenever he gives you a chance, don't just mash buttons, he's got some serious power. You can even Max Act the Air Taunt for extra DT.

When you knock him down, pop your Devil Trigger and go for a Buster!

Early on, my strategy was all about absorbing Goliath's rhythm. I'd just dodge his fists until I had the timing down cold.

Then, I started testing how many attacks I could fit into those openings. A key thing I learned with air combat is to either commit or get out quick with a jump and Air Taunt, that move is surprisingly good for dodging upwards attacks, gaining distance, and boosting style.

Don't sleep on Overture's bomb for damage, and definitely use DT Showdown into a Devil Bringer grapple when he stumbles. You can even bat those red projectiles back, but the timing is super strict.

Phase-specific tips

  • Phase 1 (Inside Building): Focus on dodging swings and ground pounds. Use air combos and charged shots. Be ready to sacrifice a Devil Breaker if sucked into his stomach.
  • Phase 2 (Outside Plaza): He'll use fire beam and throw debris more. Move laterally to dodge projectiles and the beam.
  • Phase 3 (Church Area): Similar to the outside phase but in a smaller area. Continue dodging and attacking during his recovery.

Conclusions

Focus on learning Goliath's attack patterns, staying mobile, and exploiting openings. Experiment with your abilities and Devil Breakers. Good luck!
