Dodging attacks in Devil May Cry 5
Dodging is an essential mechanic in Devil May Cry 5 to avoid enemy attacks and maintain your combo flow.
Table of contents
Basic dodge
To perform a basic dodge, press the corresponding dodge button based on your platform:
- PC: Press
Spacebar
(default) to dodge. - PS4/PS5: Press
Circle
(default) to dodge. - Xbox: Press
B
(default) to dodge.
Locking onto an enemy and pressing the jump button while tilting the left stick (or D-pad) to the side will make your character perform a dodge roll. This is your basic way to evade attacks in Devil May Cry 5, and it grants you a few precious invincibility frames (i-frames) at the start of the animation, if timed correctly.
Perfect dodge
To perform a Perfect Dodge, press the dodge button just before an enemy attack hits you. This allows you to evade the attack in slow motion, giving you a brief window to counterattack.
You will hear a distinctive sound and see a small flash if you successfully perform the movement.
Air dodge
You can also dodge while in the air (after performing a jump or aerial combo). This is helpful for dodging enemy attacks while staying mobile in the air.
- PC: Press
Spacebar
while in the air. - PS4/PS5: Press
Circle
in the air. - Xbox: Press
B
in the air.
Dodging with Devil Trigger
When you activate Devil Trigger, your movement becomes faster, and your dodges become more fluid. This can be useful for dodging large Area of Effect attacks from bosses or tougher enemies.
Useful tips
- Jumping for I-Frames: Regular jumps offer a brief window of invincibility at the beginning of the animation. Sometimes a well-timed jump is safer and more versatile than a dodge roll, especially for quick attacks.
- Timing is Key: Mashing the dodge button won't get you far. You need to learn the timing of enemy attacks to evade them effectively. Dodging too early or too late will leave you vulnerable.
- Positioning over Panic Dodging: Often, the best way to avoid damage in DMC5 is simply to not be where the attack is going to land. Utilize your character's mobility to reposition yourself strategically.
- I-Frames on Attacks: Many offensive moves in DMC5 also have invincibility frames. Skilled players use these to attack through enemy attacks, turning defense into offense
Character-Specific dodges and abilities
Each playable character has unique ways to avoid damage:
- Nero has "Table Hopper," a perfect dodge performed by jumping at the last moment before an attack connects. His Devil Breakers, like Gerbera, also offer evasive maneuvers.
- Dante's Trickster style is all about movement and evasion, featuring dashes and teleports. Even without Trickster, some of his weapon moves have i-frames.
- V can make Shadow perform a sidestep dodge and this is considered quite effective.
- Vergil has a dedicated "Trick Dodge" (if purchased) which is a powerful version of Dante's Trickster dash. He also has a block and various moves with i-frames.
